Tipps for sommer

Rasen Barfuesse 600x6003 tips for the summer!

Summers with many days over 30°C and long dry periods put your lawn under special stress. Here are 3 tips to ensure that your lawn flourishes nevertheless.

Proper watering

Proper watering is never more important than in midsummer with its long dry periods and heat. If the temperature remains above 30 degrees Celsius and not enough rain has fallen for more than three days, the lawn needs watering.
The ideal interval is two to three times a week – provided you use the right amount of water. 20 litres of water per square metre is easily tolerated by healthy lawns during dry, hot periods. This amount ensures the optimal penetration of moisture into the topmost centimetres under the turf. Only this will allow your lawn to recover from the stress of the heat right down to its roots. An adequate amount of water is like a cool bath which has an effect even deep below the surface. A faint spray mist now and again will never have such an effect. And of course, it’s also important to note that, particularly in midsummer, the best time to water is in the evening or at night. The cooler and more protected from the sun, the better the lawn can recover.

To help your lawn get through the summer without being damaged by the heat, it’s particularly important toobserve the correct cutting length. If the grass is cut too short, it’s prone to burns: the grass blades can’t adequately protect the turf from the sun, resulting in damage right down to the roots. Your lawn should still be at least3 to 4 cm high after mowing to keep it healthy throughout the summer.

If the grass has grown too high while you were on holiday...

…then the lawn should be cut in stages. Over several days, the lawn should be cut in stages – down to no more than 1/3 of its total length. Ideally, take a break of two to three days between each cutting. If there’s no one who can give the lawn regular care while you’re away on holiday for a longer period, it’s best to give it an especially generous watering on the night before your departure.
